As part of its obligations to ensure socio-economic development of its host communities, the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company Limited (NPDC) and its Joint Venture Partner, SEPLAT recently commissioned a block of four classrooms; water borehole and a renovated ultra-modern town hall projects for Ugbokodo and Okegberode communities of Delta State.
For Ugbokodo community, the projects were tailored towards the needs of students and staff. Aside from these projects, the NPDC/SEPLAT JV also awarded scholarships to qualified students.
In his speech at ceremony, the Seplat Base Manager who is also in charge of Logistic Support, Prince (Dr.) Chuks Igelenyah disclosed that ‘youths from the Ugbokodo Community are also enjoying training in Computer Technology, Garment Making, Welding and Fabrication alongside others from Okpe and Sapele’.
According to him, another programme known as the Educational Social Investment Programme was also going on to promote exceptional and respectable leaders among youths selected from public and private schools in Delta and Edo States.
Prince (Dr.) Igelenyah also mentioned that more than 1,746 schools participated in the 2012 NPDC/Seplat JV Pearls Quiz competition in Delta and Edo States. Ifuan Secondary School in Edo State emerged the overall winner in the competition. A trophy, a coaster bus and a cheque of One Million Naira (N1,000,000.00) were presented to the winning school while the participants (students) were awarded scholarships into Tertiary Institutions.
Welcoming guests at the occasion, the spokesman for Ugbokodo community, Mr. Emmanuel Aki expressed appreciation to NPDC/Seplat JV for upgrading the standard of education.
The NPDC/Seplat JV also received commendation from the Principal of Ugbokodo Secondary School; Mrs. Otoba, who said: “we cannot stop appreciating Ugbokodo community for facilitating their kind gesture in the area of security for schools and companies in the environment thereby ensuring peace for all to engage in productive business whose profit we are enjoying today.”
At the end of the Ugbokodo community ceremony, Prince (Dr.) Igelenyah commissioned the block of four classrooms and Water borehole projects and conducted dignitaries round the facilities.
At Okegberode community, the Ultra modern renovated Town Hall building was commissioned by the Supervisor, Protocol, External Relations Department, Mrs. Uwem Emmanuel on behalf of NPDC/Seplat JV.
Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman, Oil and Gas Committee for Okegborode community, Honourable Jubilee Akufo thanked NPDC/Seplat JV for ensuring peace in her host communities. He said: “although the company is yet to drill/exploit crude oil from our community, her thought to demonstrate its presence in Okegberode community is a step in the right direction”.
