NNPC Joint Exhibition: The Journey So far

When the then Executive Director Operations of the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company Limited (NPDC) Chief (Sir) Ikechukwu Okafor made concerted efforts in 2011 for NPDC; Integrated Data Services Limited (IDSL), Research & Development Division (R&D) and Nigerian Petroleum Exchange (NipeX) to come together under one umbrella for joint exhibition purposes, the management of these CSUs/SBUs readily embraced it. This was the move that created what is known today as the NNPC Joint Exhibition.

Over time, the NNPC Joint Exhibition has metamorphosed into a vibrant and resourceful unit within the NNPC Group. The CSUs/SBUs have garnered relevant experiences from a chain of outings on behalf of NNPC and have won several awards and recognitions. After five years, the Joint Exhibition is now made up of well-trained individuals who can confidently showcase the upstream sector of the Corporation not just in Nigeria, but also at the international level.

But the journey to this level was not a walk in the park. The CSUs/SBUs started small; navigated difficult curves; went through the thick and thin of small beginnings and overcame the initial doubts that threatened its survival. One of such challenges was the allocation of cost which all the parties agreed to share equally. Notable also is the much needed support from the NNPC Group Public Affairs Division (GPAD).

So far, the concept has thrived beyond expectation, saving the corporation huge financial resources. Thus, rather than exhibit separately at three or four different booths as was the case in the past, only one booth is now required, that is the NNPC Group Pavilion.

The NNPC Group Pavilion traditionally plays host to Top Government functionaries such as the Honourable Minister of Petroleum Resources, (HMPR), the Lagos State Governor, Group Managing Director of NNPC, Captains of the Oil and Gas industry across the globe during the opening ceremonies and tour of exhibition booths. It is usually used for Press Conferences by the HMPR and GMD, NNPC.

This new model which has come to complement the on-going restructuring efforts in the Corporation is indeed a step in the right direction as it has helped to strengthen the operational bond between NNPC and its subsidiaries as well as reinforce the Corporation’s corporate identity and public image.

Our success profile has also shown that the adoption of this unified model has enhanced members’ ability to better coordinate and manage their participation at Annual Conferences and Exhibitions such as the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and National Association of Petroleum Explorationist (NAPE) as well as underlines the working synergy between NNPC and all its subsidiaries.

For instance, the SPE Nigeria Annual International Conference and Exhibition which began many years back like NAPE, has grown to become one of the largest upstream Oil and Gas event in Africa. Each year, these events usually attract international Oil Companies (IOCs) and industry practitioners and key stakeholders at all levels.

Both platforms have continued to serve as opportunity to learn, debate and challenge ideas that chart the right course towards a sustainable future for the industry.

Over the years, NNPC’s participation in these exhibitions has grown and the corporation and its subsidiaries have become major sponsors of the annual exhibitions. NNPC also views the events as veritable platforms for human capacity development for its staff participants at the exhibitions are usually exposed to new trends and developments in the industry. In addition, they are able to share thoughts and brainstorm with colleagues from other companies, thereby boosting their own understanding of the industry while enhancing their skill sets.

In view of the corporate significance of these exhibitions, and for proper identification, participating companies are expected to be attired in uniform outfits. The NNPC exhibition members are traditionally dressed in the corporation’s colours - red, green, black and white. The use of these colours is a deliberate move to boost the corporation’s brand. And of course the dressing is usually complemented with other details like pin-ups with NNPC logo.

One of the major highlights of the exhibitions is the NNPC Quiz Competition. The quiz is one of the packages that attract visitors to the pavilion. It has become a major attraction as hundreds of students from Tertiary institutions across Nigeria enthusiastically participate in the competition. The competition also serves as an avenue to educate students and other members of the public about the operations of NNPC and its subsidiaries. The quiz competition has indeed projected NNPC as a responsible corporate citizen.

Apart from the Quiz Session, the NNPC Group Pavilion is usually a beehive of activities as many other exciting and educative events are organized to attract local and foreign visitors to the booth. For example, the talk show session by NipeX on how to do business in NNPC is targeted at wooing investors.

At other times, documentaries of the participating companies are usually streamed to enlighten people on the activities of NNPC and its subsidiaries. The list goes on and on. That is why year in year out, the NNPC Group has won several awards for its innovativeness at the exhibitions.

One of the lectures that was delivered during the 2016 SPE-NAICE was ‘How to Become the Most Valuable Player in the Oil and Gas Industry’. The beauty of this session was that a member of the NNPC family handled the topic.

The NNPC Exhibition team is also planning for the inclusion of the NNPC Medical Services (Vital signs and eye test) as part of the exhibition. Confirming this development, the Chairman of the Exhibition Committee and Manager, External Relations Department, NPDC, Mr. Ugo Atugbokoh said “We are also planning to incorporate Medical test during our next outing at NAPE later in the year. All these are aimed at touching people’s lives in the most positive way,”

As usual, the NNPC Joint Exhibition team is charged up and well prepared to entertain, educate and inform students, workers and every other  participants at the 34th NAPE Annual International Conference and Exhibition which is billed to hold from 13th – 17th November, 2016 at the prestigious Eko Hotels and Suite Victoria Island Lagos.
